All Is Full of Love: Timbers Win Season Opener in Familiar Fashion 04/18/2010 by Lucas Grzybowski
I woke up this morning in a bit of agony. You probably did too so I won't go into it. After a few cups of tea and coffee (etc etc) to make me right, I headed out to catch a TA derby match featuring Vendetta FC and Portland Griffons (you'll never beat 'em!... until you play 'em!). I figured it was a lovely Sunday morning, and me with nothing to do and soccer on the brain from last night; I had no reason not to go support my friends' teams (that, and I had to get my cooler out of Ricky's car). Someone has to say it by Bob Kellett
The 2010 Portland Timbers should win the league.
The team returns all but one meaningful player from a record-setting squad. The team has added a bevy of young, talented players. The team has added some solid veteran leadership. The team has the most depth in the league, the most talent, and the greatest advantage when its plays at home. The team plays in a league that nearly imploded last season. The team has the best ownership and best management in the league.
The Portland Timbers should win the league. (continue)

We're Going to Win The Something, Something, Something by Lucas Grzybowski
The cherry blossoms are blossoming, the Blazers are limping bravely into the playoffs (injuries, schminjuries!), the weather changes every five minutes from rain to sun to rain again, and sidewalk seating is starting to appear at bars and cafes around town. Do you know what that means? Spring is springing in the Rose City. And do you know what THAT means?
Timbers season is upon us! (continue)

Hoop Dreams
by Dave Hoyt
Here we are. Preparing to launch our last season in the 2nd division. Standing at the end of an era of Timbers history before plunging into MLS. And I have to say? I?m absolutely reveling in it. I?ve always been a planner and a schemer. Sometimes I enjoy saving and planning for a vacation more than taking the trip itself. Even more often I enjoy the workouts, rumors and horse trading of the NFL and NBA drafts more than the seasons themselves. Now is where history hasn?t been written yet. This is when anything is possible. (continue)

The Young Guns
by Bob Kellett
He's a 24-year-old defender who was a stellar soccer player in college in California. He had a brief cup of coffee in MLS and now finds himself with a second division club in Portland. He is Steve Purdy.
He is also Scot Thompson. (continued)

We go to exotic lands to conquer

Kitsap. The mere name evokes mysticism. Hardly, but nevertheless it is a nice enough place for the Portland Timbers to do a bit of training without the distraction of seeing anything interesting, eating anywhere good, or falling into a hole in left field at PGE Park. (continue)

Taking Stock with Three Weeks to Go
by Bob Kellett
Good weekend ahead for the training Timbers. They have a preseason match against Vancouver in Seattle on Friday followed by a closed door affair versus the University of Portland on Saturday. Both games provide Gavin Wilkinson to experiment with the lineup and for the players to gain further fitness. I expect that we'll see the veterans in the lineup against the Caps and some of the younger guns against Portland.
With the club kicking things off earlier than ever, this year's preseason is seemingly taking forever. (continue)

Cha-Cha-Changes
by Bob Kellett
Be thankful you are a Portland Timbers fan. Not only is your club growing, maturing, and winning, but it is leaving the mess of second division soccer and joining a first division league that will have its mess (hopefully) sorted out by next season. No reason to go into too much detail about the background second division workings since years from now historians will be looking at Dave's postas the definitive source of information, but it is interesting to think about what this turmoil may mean for the Timbers on the field. Welcome to The Woodwork
2010 is shaping up to be a unique season for the Portland Timbers. The Woodwork.org hopes to bring you content and commentary that you won't find elsewhere. We're assembling a great team of writers, photographers, pundits, experts and idiots. We hope you enjoy it and visit often.
We're still working on filling in the full content but what the end result will be will be a very thorough portal into the team, its players, the matches and everything else. Soon you will find the game links active and they will lead you to content and information about the contest, both pre match and post match. Similarly, the player links will soon be active and will grow throughout the season as we publish photos and interviews of each squad member as 2010 evolves.
There are three columns currently, that will each have a few contributors. The Sorbet will be critique and commentary. Consider it the editorial page. Ground Level will be focused on the matches themselves. Wooddork is for the lighter side of the sport.
Things will evolve and change. We appreciate your comments and hope to hear from you.
